This project is an open experiment which combines collective and individual approaches, analytical and creative thinking. Its idea relates to the written work “Visual Translations of Humanitarian Concepts” by Canadian and British scholars (Daniel Simeoni, Alexis Nouss, Boris Chukhovich).

Consultants:
Natalya Andrianiva (Kyrgyzstan), Natalya Dyu (Kazakhstan), Ulan Japarov (Kyrgyzstan), Oleg Karpov (Uzbekistan), Irena Kistovich (Turkmenistan), Jamshed Kholikov (Tajikistan)

Participants: artists from Central Asia
Media: photography with technical interference of any degree
Duration: May 2009 – May 2010
Events: 4 exhibitions (Almaty, Dushanbe, Bishkek, Almaty), release of the DVD

Goals:
– Curatorial research in artistic way (“reconnaissance in force”) – in order to create photo network STILLS.
– Hyperbolized “presentation” of CA art through simple and polemical concepts (materialization of representative phantasm).
The first 2 concepts depict “strategic vectors” of our art. The third – existential and naïve, brings a feeling of openness to the future.

Concepts:

1. “STIILS-Attraction” (key words: attraction, show, and latest events, spectacular, showy). Exhibition “STILLS-Attraction: To be seen”: October 1, 2009, Almaty, Tengri-Umai Gallery.
The deadline has already passed.

More than 2800 photos by 104 artists were nominated to the project and only 113 photos by 48 artists were selected.

2. “STIILS-Locality” (exotics, periphery, context, extremes, Orientalism).
DEADLINE: NOVEMBER 10, 2009. Exhibition “STILLS-Locality: To be recognized”: December 2009, Bactria Cultural Centre

3. “STIILS-Enthusiasm” (unselfishness, pathos, sincerity, “home art”).
DEADLINE: JANUARY 15, 2009. Exhibition “STILLS-Enthusiasm: To be or not to be”: February 2010, Bishkek “Koldo Art” Gallery

Outcome:
Three mosaic photo-films made of photos by various artists presenting Central Asian Anthology of Images.
An original sound track will be composed for each of the films. Each of the films will be displayed as a video installation at separate exhibitions. The exhibitions will be hosted in three CA capital cities:

“STILLS-Attraction: To be seen” in Almaty which is believed to be a CA megalopolis.
“STILLS-Locality: To be recognized” – in Dushanbe where an oriental reputation and nostalgic soviet environment are combined.
“STILLS-Enthusiasm: To be or not to be?” – in Bishkek which is well-known as a centre of unselfish creativity.

Exhibition “STILLS-Summary”: April 2010, Almaty.

Photo artists are welcome to visualize these three concepts:
– Create a new photo or offer an old one on one or more of the abovementioned topics.
– Photos can be illustrating, imaginary, they can comment a topic, be staged or documentary, computer processed to any degree. The amount of offered photos is up to 10 photos for each of the concepts.
– Please send your photo to photoartstills@gmail.com
– The size of each JPEG file must not exceed 1 Ìb (high definition images will be requested after the selection process. If the image was not requested, it may be displayed on the slide show but not at the “STILLS-Summary” exhibition).
– Please send also your CV or a short resume with all the contact information. Please highlight the concept of your photo and the title of the work (if any).
